The New EP Lens for Hemianopsia

The EP  lens for hemianopsia was developed at Harvard University's Schepens Eye Research Institute by Dr. Eli Peli, a senior scientist at Harvard's Schepen's Eye Research Institute. The  institute is the largest independent eye research institute in America.

It was the subject of a national multi-center study of which our doctors at the Low Vision Centers of Indiana participated in the clinical research.

Clinical trials of the EP lens design began in 2004 at over 40 sites throughout the U.S.  An acceptance of about 75% has been reported by the study.

The system is fabricated with either one or two segments. One segment is typical placed above the line of sight and one below the eye on the side of the vision loss. In hemianopsia the vision loss is in both eyes. For example, if the loss is on the right side of both eyes, the EP is placed in the right lens. Each segment shifts the image inward. The brain perceptual fills in the different between the upper and lower image.
