New Auto Focus Eyewear
![]() |
EyeFine is a revolutionary new low vision aid! It is an auto focus Eyefine is a telescopic system that merges both passive auto focus and active infrared auto focus technology to aid patients with vision loss. With eyeFINE, many low vision patients can read, watch TV, view their computer screens, watch sporting events or religious services and do many other things. EyeFINE’s auto focus technology will instantly focus wherever the patient looks. The wider field, bright image and instant focus make eyeFINE easy to use. The key features of this system include the very wide, bright visual field and the automatic focus at any distance from 12 inches to infinity with both passive and active focus. Passive focus even allows eyeFINE to focus through the windshield of a car.

The inspiration for eyeFINE began 30 years ago with an idea by Toshinori Tsuchiya, M.D., an eye doctor at Miyazaki Chuou Eye Hospital. It was the idea of using camera technology to help the visually impaired. A chance discussion with the president of camera manufacturer Nitto Kogaku K. K., at a golf course, decades later led to the development of the eyeFINE as a joint venture between two companies, Keimei and Nitto Kogaku K.K.
| Dr. Richard L. Windsor, our senior associate, fit the first US patient in September of 2003 at the Low Vision Center of Indianapolis. The patient presented with vision loss from diabetic retinopathy. | ||

Passive auto focus systems respond to the brightness and contrast of the object viewed responding to the ambient light the subject is reflecting.? Two photodiode line sensors located at right and left are used to analyze the image, and focus the lenses by computing parallax, the difference between the signals from the two photodiode line sensors. The photodiodes send a signal to the microprocessor in eyeFINE which analyzes the data and focus the lenses
Triangulation, three points
measuring system, is performed using the two sets of photodiode line
sensors, which are photodiode arrays with lined small photodiodes.
When visibility is low in darkness, eyeFINE also applies the same method as above. When eyeFINE tries to focus through a window, it decides which to focus; the light reflected off the window or the object outside the window, depending on the intensity of brightness and contrast.? In most cases it focuses on higher brightness and clearer contrast.?

| EyeFINE is Keplerian telescopic system made from six lenses. It has a bright, wide field of view. It has a field of view of 16.4 degrees. At distance, it provides 3.5X magnification. At near, it provides 4.7X magnification. It can focus from 12 inches to infinity. The standard eyeFINE can accommodate patient prescriptions from -10.00 to + 7.00 with higher powers available by special order. It can be special ordered with +15.00 to -2.00 or +5.00 to -12.00 focus ranges. It comes with two frame sizes. It is also available in a handheld form. | ||
| EyeFINE‘s power pack contains four AA nickel-hydride rechargeable batteries which can provide up to 8 hours of use. | ||
| This system may be helpful for patients with central vision loss with visual acuities ranging from approximately 20/60 to 20/400. Patients with conditions like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, myopic degeneration, albinism, cone-rod dystrophies, Achromatopsia, Histoplasmosis, optic atrophy and other forms of central vision loss may benefit from the eyeFINE system. | ||
| The current eyeFINE system is not yet mounted in a position for driving, but we are working with the manufacturer to mount the system for bioptic driving. The ability to use this system for driving in the future will also depend on the individual state laws on bioptic driving. | ||
