Filters for Macular Degeneration
| Macular degeneration patients may experience two types of severe glare problems. One is caused by bleaching out the retinal pigments in sunlight. | ||
| The other is veiling glare often caused by scaring and depigmentation inside the eye. | ||
| A common error in prescribing sun wear for macular degeneration patients is the prescribing of dark grey sun wear. The dark grey sun filter will function well in bright sun but when a patient enters a shaded area (under a tree, a shaded street or on a porch), their vision is immediately reduced. | ||
| Amber filters reduce glare without dimming the patient's vision to a level of functional impairment. We often put a light amber filter in the patient's inside eyewear and then use a moderate amber filter for sun wear. | ||
