Sector or Spot Patching to Control Diplopia

Patching does not need to be total. If the patient has an area of binocular vision, it is often effective to patch only the sector where double vision occurs.

This allows the patient to continue to use both eyes where possible. The eyewear to the left is used by a patient who has very debilitating double vision which occurs suddenly when she looks to the right or up.

This method has been helpful in certain cranial nerve paralysis and in Dorsal Mid- Brain Syndrome where vertical diplopia and retraction nystagmus may suddenly occur.

The sector can be patched with translucent material. See the section on semi-translucent patches.
